We recently lunched here. We ordered the fried chicken, a tofu soup, and the beef cabbage stew. The fried chicken was perfectly crispy, but it lacked the bold flavor we were hoping for. The tofu soup, on the other hand, was excellent--rich, flavorful, and comforting. Unfortunately, the beef cabbage stew fell short; it was a bit one-dimensional, with the flavor mostly overpowered by cabbage. Despite the mixed impressions of the dishes, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was cozy. It's worth a visit, especially for the tofu soup!
One of my friends really loves this tofu soup spot (and it was close to the ice cream place that my other friend really likes) so our group of five swung by on Saturday afternoon a little after 1pm (managed to find street parking nearby). There were only a few occupied tables when we arrived, so we were seated immediately. It was perfect soup weather, so after looking over their menu, I decided to get their seafood tofu soup with a mild spice level. I noticed a sign with an article mentioning their kimchi pancake, and other reviews also mentioned it, so a friend and I also decided to split one. We didn't have to wait too long for the food to come out, and I liked that everything came out at the same time! As someone with a low tolerance for spice, the mild was personally perfect for me (any spicier and I wouldn't have enjoyed it). I wouldn't say it's the best one I've had, but my craving for tofu soup was satisfied (my friend really liked their mushroom tofu soup so maybe I'll get that next time). The kimchi pancake was definitely an excellent decision -- it was hot and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with bits of kimchi in the middle. I will be thinking about this kimchi pancake for a long time haha I enjoyed it quite a bit. Note that service fee/gratuity was automatically applied for us since we were a party of five. I don't live in the area, so I don't see myself coming back often, but if you're nearby, I would highly recommend the kimchi pancake!!
This is one of our faves, and has been in regular lunch rotation for almost 15 years. Our daughter, now 11, has been going her entire life, and loves it. We come for casual lunches, and has been my request for Mother's Day lunch, and birthday lunch, etc, because we love it so much. Comforting hot bubbling tofu soup, rice with a crispy crunchy bottom in stone bowls, delicious dol sot bibimbap, banchan, friendly service, yes, please! My only recent disappointment was that their Oakland location finally succumbed to the changes they made at the Berkeley location... mushrooms inside the batter of the mung bean pancake. I'm allergic to mushrooms and love the pancake, but the Oakland location was where they only placed it on top of the batter, not mixed in like Berkeley. Today we learned they now mix it in at Oakland too. Sigh. @pyeongchangtofuhouse, I plead with you to keep the batter as you did for the many years prior, add the mushrooms per order, so that I can order mine without. Please!!! Still love it there, but hope someone from the restaurant reads this and hears my plea. Let the mung bean pancake be modified to have no mushrooms, please!!! Please!!! Or maybe this is a sign for us to branch out and try other Korean restaurants in the area. I'm a creature of habit, I wish I didn't have to.
Visited on a Thursday night around 6:45pm with a friend, restaurant had several other guest but several open tables so we're seated right when we arrived. Food: Mushroom beef tofu soup - really tasty.came out bubbling hot, asked for medium level spice and it was very pleasant and balanced. Soup had great savory flavor with a nice chili notes, and beefy notes. Silken tofu helped cut some of the heat,. veggies rounded out the dish. Banchan - okay selection of kimchi, potato, cold tofu, and zucchini kimchi, all were on the large chunky side, with decent flavor but nothing noteworthy Crispy rice that accompanied the tofu soup was fantastic, perfectly crunchy and tasty with a slight char added great texture to the tofu soup Drinks: Banana Makgeoli - sweet, creamy, slightly effervescent, a unique rice wine with a banana flavor Service was fine, quick and efficient, staff brought out dishes quickly and brought out water, banchan and drinks promptly after ordering. Overall really enjoyed the tofu soup here, super warm and comforting, portions are generous and service is quick. Definitely worth a visit.
In agreement with what many others have said, Pyeong Chang offers excellent food and a pleasant staff, but it wasn't elevated to a degree that justified the higher price point compared to the flurry of korean restaurants across oakland and east bay. Tofu soup was quite good, but didn't stand out and was also smaller in portion than I'd hoped. Kimchi pancake was crispy and greasy, quite sumptuous, but I didn't taste the kimchi that much. The side of charred rice was a unique touch. Not much else sticks out.
A must visit! Some of the BEST Korean fried chicken I've had. The chicken was soo crispy and light while the chicken was perfectly juicy. While the fried chicken (the original) was the fan favorite was the star of the dish the ginseng chicken soup was also a favorite. The soup comes with a whole chicken stuffed with sticky rice, jujubes, and chestnuts. The soup is thick with collagen and packed with flavor. You can even dip the chicken meat into salt and pepper if you want that added flavor. Our group saw the kimchi pancake award sign and knew we wanted to order. And just as described the kimchi pancake didn't disappoint, it was crispy not too oily. The pancake came out piping hot and retains its crispy texture for quite some time, the light batter didn't feel too heavy and gloopy. Made for a crisp bright bite! Our group had a memorable dinner and will definitely be back for more fried chicken! The service was helpful and we got to dine in the back room lending to a more private experience.
PCTH is my family's favorite spot for Korean food (a la carte, not bbq) in East Bay. We come here regularly for weeknight dinners, always get seated quickly and enjoy the food. Service is quick and friendly. The tables are good for groups, too. We regularly order the kalbi, spicy pork, tofu soup, bibimbap and cold noodles. Highly recommend the cold noodles in summer! The spicy pork and kalbi (main meat dishes) are a bit pricey for the quantity, but we still get them and enjoy. Everything is so flavorful and filling. Always a plus knowing that when I come home, we'll be going to Pyeong Chanf at least once.
Came here with my friend to catch up over dinner! First off the service was great and the servers were kind and attentive. The restaurant itself has a good amount of seating so we didn't wait too long. Definitely a nice place to come for some comforting Korean food! Dumpling Tofu Soup 8/10 - Came with some sides which tasted fresh. The soup itself was excellent! Definitely one of the better sundubu's I've had! The price of the soup itself seemed a bit expensive to me but perhaps this is the normal going rate these days as I've seen the prices on these go up over the years! Inflation :( Yang Nyum Chicken 8.5/10 - Let me just say wow, the sweet chili sauce on the chicken is very good! The chicken was crispy and wasn't too spicy. Definitely getting your hands dirty a bit with this one but it's worth. Would highly recommend! My friend and I enjoyed our meal here and I would recommend this place if you're looking for some solid Korean food!
I never thought to come in here until a friend said she was craving Korean food. Looking over the menu, how do you decide what to get, there is a lot to choose from. We had a group of 4, 3 of us had never been here so we completely over ordered. To start we ordered: Kimchi pancake Mung bean pancake Chicken wings: regular and soy garlic Soju cocktail I didn't try the mung bean, but the Kimchi pancake was the perfect balance of crispy outside and soft inside. Those that tried the mung bean pancake also loved it. The chicken wings were very big, our favorite was the soy garlic one. It seemed pricey for wings but there were worth it. Not sure what cocktail we got, but it was delicious. For our mains, a friend and I shared the Del Sot Bi Bim Bop, it came with their original tofu soup The Bi Bim Bop was lacking in flavor, I figured for over $20, it would taste good, but it was a bit disappointing, the savior of the meal was the tofu soup, I had never had tofu soup before and this was amazing!!! It was so good I ordered it the next day for delivery. Pro tip: it's way better in the clay pot when you dine in. The service was great and attentive. They made sure our waters were filled and that we had everything we needed.
After landing in Oakland, we headed straight to this spot and walked in right when they opened their doors during evening hours at 5pm. We walked into a dining room that can accommodate small to large parties. The Banchan arrived first which included four unlimited sides, which included sprouts, kimchi, pickled spicy cucumbers, and soft potatoes. Our favorite was the cucumbers which paired well with the meal. Starving, we ordered the Soy Sauce and Fresh Garlic Chicken Wings that came with a small side of Daikon. A half order comes with 10 wings. The wings were delicious! They were crispy, meaty, and so flavorful. This was a non spicy dish. We also tried the Kim Chi Bi Bim Bap with Beef. The dish arrived piping hot with a fried egg on top. A comforting rice dish topped with kimchi, carrots. spinach, sprouts, and beef. You'll get to enjoy the crispy rice once you reach the bottom. A side of tofu soup was included and I ordered it mild. The broth was spicy and flavorful, filled with tofu. I saved most of it to take home. Finally, we tried the tofu dumpling soup, which arrived bubbling hot. The Stew contained beef and kimchi dumplings and was totally what we were looking for when picking a dinner spot. Overall, great services and delicious food! The area is filled with many Korean options and we were happy to have found this spot.
